Traveling light / Lynne Branard.

Branard, Lynne. (Author).

Summary:

"Driving from North Carolina to New Mexico with her three-legged dog, a strange man's ashes, and a waitress named Blossom riding shotgun isn't exactly what Alissa Wells ever wanted to be doing. But it's exactly what she needs... It all starts when Alissa impulsively puts a bid on an abandoned storage unit, only to become the proud new owner of Roger Hart's remains. Two weeks later, she jumps in her car and heads west, thinking that returning the ashes of a dead man might be the first step on her way to a new life. She isn't wrong. Especially when Blossom, who just graduated from high school, hitches a ride with her to Texas, and Alissa has to get used to letting someone else take the wheel. Posting about their road trip on Facebook, complete with photos of Roger at every stop, Blossom opens Alissa's eyes to the road in front of her -- and to how sometimes the best things in life are the ones you never see coming." -- Provided by the publisher.

Branard brings readers the later-in-life coming-of-age story of 35-year-old Alissa Wells, who leads a pretty uneventful existence working for her dad's small-town newspaper in North Carolina. On a whim, she enters an online bidding contest for a random storage unit she saw on a reality-TV show and, nine weeks later, she is standing in the storage unit with the most interesting item in her hands: a dead man's remains from a mortuary in New Mexico. Alissa is more than a little intrigued as to how Roger Hart's remains ended up in a storage unit so far from home and impulsively decides to jump in the car with her three-legged dog and drive to New Mexico in hopes of returning Roger to his family. Along the way, she picks up Blossom, a teenager wise beyond her years; a dose of self-confidence; and a new way of looking at life. Branard's deliberate pacing mirrors the journey to self-realization Alissa undergoes. Readers will be pulling for Alissa all the way to the novel's satisfying conclusion.
