The Amish communities of Ohio may advocate a plain life in which they set themselves apart from "the English," but they can't isolate from crime. After several Amish teens are reported missing, State Agent Tomasetti requests that Police Chief Kate Burkholder, who was raised Amish, join the investigation team as a bridge between cultures. Kathleen McInerney returns to narrate this fourth in the Amish Crime Thriller series. Adapting her tempo and energy to match the story line, McInerney seamlessly shifts from action to dialogue, tweaking the tension to keep listeners' full attention. Her characterizations, particularly those of the Amish, are clear without being theatrical, and listeners can easily discern individuals' general ages and backgrounds. The gritty story is tempered by Tomasetti and Burkholder's relationship and the descriptions of Amish culture. Several teenage Amish girls have gone missing, and Painters Mill, Ohio, chief of police Kate Burkholder, who grew up Amish, is asked to help investigate. McInerney, the reader of other series titles, including Sworn to Silence (2009), captures Kate's conflicting emotions. As a seasoned police officer, Kate is precise and clearheaded, yet memories of her protected Amish childhood tug at her. McInerney handles Pennsylvania Dutch phrases fluently and depicts the Amish characters with sensitivity. She also manages to make male characters, particularly grieving Special Agent John Tomasetti, sound believable. The search for the missing teens (including the niece of Kate's brother-in-law) becomes even more urgent after one of the girls is found dead. Insights into the Amish community, well-developed characters, and McInerney's compassionate reading elevate this beyond usual crime fare. The audio concludes with an author interview conducted by McInerney. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews. - Library Journal Reviews : LJ Reviews 2012 October #1
In Castillo's fifth entry in her "Amish Country" series featuring police chief Kate Burkholder, Kate investigates the disappearance of several young Amish women, all of whom are going through rumspringa, a time when youth may enjoy experiences outside the strict rules of Amish life prior to baptism. The trail leads to an Ohio farm possessing a terrible secret, which will put Kate in danger and her life on the line. She relies on her skills as an investigator and background as an Amish woman who abandoned that existence to solve the case. The thrilling story holds the listener's interest while offering a glimpse into the closed world of the Plain People. Reader Kathleen McInerney does an excellent job in presenting this gripping tale. VERDICT This mystery is recommended for Castillo's fans and those interested in similar stories in this setting. ["This fast-paced thrill ride through the always fascinating Amish country of Ohio should appeal to readers of Karin Slaughter, Betty Webb, and Lisa Jackson. Devotees of this series won't want to miss it," read the review of the New York Times best-selling Minotaur: St. Martin's hc, LJ Xpress Reviews, 6/22/12.âEd.]âStephen L. Hupp, West Virginia Univ.
